Safrea Typical rates are provided as a guideline to help freelancers ensure that they charge a rate that can feasibly cover their business expenses.

Safrea recommends the following minimum rates as being fair and equitable industry standards, which employers should honour.

A Safrea member says:

There are definitely different rates for indexing! I negotiated R25 a page for the woman who indexed the HIV book I did for CUP a while ago. The rate should depend on whether the index is complex or simple - not necessarily on the grade of the text. A simple index is easy to do in InDesign if you are setting the book - we generate them for our school texts quite often and don't get paid a lot for them. You can also generate complex indexes using InDesign - but we haven't had to do that.

But if you are indexing using dedicated indexing software or the more laborious index card method you should definitely be paid more for something that is more complex.
