Safrea typical rates are provided as a guideline to help freelancers ensure that they charge a rate that can feasibly cover their business expenses.
Safrea works to raise the professional standing of freelancers in the media field, and promotes professional standards and ethical conduct by both freelancers and their clients. Safrea recommends the following minimum rates as being fair and equitable industry standards, which employers should honour.
WORD RATES - MAGAZINES
New or junior writers: from R2,00 per word
Experienced or senior writers: from R2,75 per word
Specialist writers: from R3,50 per word
WORD RATES - NEWSPAPERS
Conglomerate Newspapers (Sales over 20,000): from R2,00 per word (body), to R3,50 per word (lead or F/P stories)
Conglomerate Newspapers (Sales less than 20,000): from R1,75 per word (body), to R3,00 per word (lead or F/P stories)
Community & Neighbourhood Newspapers: from R1,50 per word
COPY EDITING RATES - MAGAZINES
R180,00 – R250,00 per 1000 words (specialist content at higher rates)
Magazine copy editing - outsourced: R300,00 per hour (own equipment)
Magazine copy editing - in-house: R200,00 per hour
External ad agency/brochure copy: R350,00 per hour
PROOF-READING RATES - MAGAZINES
R50 – R75 per 1000 words
or R250,00 per hour
or R35,00 per layout page
SPECIAL PROJECTS (WORDS & IMAGES)
Advertorial and PR Usage: 200% of normal rate
Advertising Usage: 300% of normal rate
WEB EDITING
Editing onscreen: 30c per word (general) to 50-70c per word (technical/
specialised)
Translation: R1-R2 per word
Rewriting/overwriting: R1 per word
Minimum charge for individual small jobs: R350
