Remember the day the news hit our shores that Rolling Stone Magazine would come to South Africa? We do! That is why we - The Western Cape Committee - have invited the magazine's editor-in-chief - Miles Keylock to chat to you guys. How AWESOME is that?!

He will speak to us about what the title hopes to achieve; what stories it plans to tell and of course give us a few insider anecdotes about launching a title like this in a tough market. As always, there will be a Q & A session where you’ll have a chance to ask about pitching opportunities, photographic and editorial policy, gaps for freelancers and much more.

Miles is a familiar name to most South African arts journalists. He’s been writing features, interviews and reviews for about two decades, and his work has graced the pages of a vast array of publications, from the Cape Times and Obrigado Magazine, to GQ and the Black Business Quarterly. He has long been a Cape Town correspondent for the Mail & Guardian. He has also been a South African Music Awards judge, taught English literature and drama at UCT and UWC, and is now responsible for one of the most legendary music magazines on the planet.

‘[We’ll] look out for those artists with attitude,’ Miles told Lisa Van Wyk of the M&G last year. ‘Those stories that haven't been given the column space to be told. We're spoiled for choice in South Africa. So many of our stories have not been told. So many of our artists need respect. Our readers too. Long form, in-depth features and interviews is a great way to start showing them respect.’

Come and meet Miles and have a drink and a chat with fellow freelancers. This event is free for SAFREA members. Guests are most welcome (please DO bring your partner or a friend or two, three! Pass on this invite to other who might be interested!) but are charged a small fee of R30. Do let us know if you can or can’t make it.

We will have a competition too. The prize that is up for grabs is a R300 Jacana voucher! Last but not least: stay a while for a glass and some networking :)

Date & Time: 29 Feb 2012 / 18:00 for 18:30 (talk starts at 18.30 sharp!)

Location: Ikhaya Lodge / Dunkley Square / Gardens / Cape Town
