We regularly deal with textbook publishers, & definitely don't accept a word rate.
Our standard single use SA rate with guys like Maskew Miller Longman is R1,000 per article under 400w (which is the most common usage) for textbooks with a print run under 5,000 copies, with a sliding scale going up to R5,000 for longer articles or for textbooks with larger print runs. We also expect additional payment (usually @ 50% of the original agreement) for any reprint or republication of the textbook.
We apply similar scales to foreign book publishers, with a lot of US universities happily paying US$1,000 for single usage rights.
